Welcome back to reality, and congratulations on all you accomplished during your recently concluded odyssey away from it.
The most universally sound advice for anybody aspiring an endeavor the magnitude of an Olympic campaign is to enjoy the process, and you did that. The benefits to be gained from such an endeavor lie in that process, and you reaped them. The final result merely represents a number, and the people who choose to preach that you landed on that number by “folding under the pressure of the Games” only harbor jealousy, because they realize that they could never even approach the level of competence needed to climb up on that Olympic stage in the first place. If they can make themselves sound reasonably rational while cutting you down, then we just might think that they could have done better themselves . . . fat chance.
You made yourself an Olympian this year. Someday when you find yourself dottering on your walker at the end of a pier as your great grandchildren head out in their Optimists, people will still point at you and marvel, “That guy sailed in the Beijing Olympics.”

You’ve represented yourself, your family and your country admirably. While this regatta was disappointing in many ways, just continue to think of it as not an end to the journey but another step to another worlds, olympics or americas cup campaign sometime in the future.
Your writing is excellent and I thoroughly have enjoyed reading your impressions and exploits on the water. Your maturity and respect for the sport and others comes through and I would encourage you to explore your talents in this field as well as sailing.
